I've discovered this seems to do a bit worse reading rental discs than my normal Sony Blu Ray player, but after cleaning the discs it seems to be working. Hopefully this'll be the last time I need to update the review!
Okay, here's my original review, which for the most part is still relevant:
I've been surprised it's taken Sony this long to release a portable Blu Ray player, considering they were one of the main companies involved in the standard. I've been scared off by negative reports on some earlier portable players by other companies, but thought I'd take a shot on this.
Random things about it:
-The unit physically looks a lot like a notebook computer. The screen opens up just like one (and it looks even more like a notebook when the screen's shut). It's black, and kind of a very dark blue that is easily mistaken for black. (I'm noticing in some pictures it looks fairly bright blue, but in real life,... Read more

Unfortunate quirks, but a good player, June 11, 2011 By This review is from: Sony BDP-SX1000 Blu Ray Disc Player (Black) (Electronics) I don't disagree with Forrie Lowell's review (if you subtract the hype and !!!), but I'm not so fully enthusiastic about this model. Great picture (except in full daylight) - yes. Wide range of screen angles is wonderful.
Here's what makes me take a couple of stars off - the HOLD button, when engaged, prevents any buttons on the unit from having an effect, but all buttons on the remote still work. The result of this is that if I pack the unit in a notebook bag with the remote, any accidental pressure on the remote's ON button switches the player on in the bag and the battery begins to drain. I only noticed this because I heard the player power up in the bag. The remote was even in a different compartment of the bag. There is no convenient way to prevent the unit from accidentally being switched on. That's just plain dumb!
Sony Support (which did reply to my email very promptly, thank you) suggested I cover the unit's remote sensor with a cloth, but this had no... Read more

Some major drawbacks, June 27, 2011 By This review is from: Sony BDP-SX1000 Blu Ray Disc Player (Black) (Electronics) i have had previous the first generation Panasonic and the Samsung BDP-8000. The Samsung in my opinion is just about perfect, just missing 2 minor things. It has no Audio/Video in, which the Sony provides and no Swivel Screen.
Now to the Sony. The 5 hour battery is certainly great, one of the reasons i purchased it. But wait a second.... that battery is completely built in the unit. I have never seen anything like this (never had a recent portable Sony DVD player), but this is crazy. One of the things to consider, when buying portable players is eventually buying an extra battery (to get 10hours or just for a replacement, but i would never consider opening this player up. It has 14 screws in the bottom, just like a notebook.
Now to the other drawback. I input my 1 TB harddrive through the USD with several various files and while the Samsung recognizes and plays all files and sets them up nicely, this unit, eventhough it advertizes playing several files, just gives me... Read more
